Artist's Description

This rear view of the Iwo Jima Monument, photographed through trees, shows the back sides of the men raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the World War II Battle of Iwo Jima. The monument, formally known as the United States Marine Corps Memorial, is adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, DC. The large monument, which looks small from this rear perspective, depicts the six soldiers, five Marines and one Navy corpsman, who raised the American flag on that historic day in February 1945. The actual event was immortalized by journalist Joe Rosenthal in his Pulitzer Prize winning photograph, which in 1954 served as the basis for the new Marine Corps Memorial in Arlington, Virginia.
