In the form of a pentagon, this five-sided granite memorial in Arlington National Cemetery is for the 184 people who died when Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon on the morning of September 11, 2001. Beneath the memorial are the remains of 25 people whose families chose that they be buried as a group in Arlington. The names of all 184 victims are on the five sides of the memorial. If a name is preceded by a diamond, it means the person is one of the twenty-five buried beneath the marker. There are also five victims for whom remains were either not found or unidentifiable, and their names are preceded by a star. The Pentagon 9/11 Memorial is in the southeast corner of Arlington, the closest point in the cemetery to the Pentagon, which looms large a short distance away.
I enjoy photography and writing, and sometimes think of myself as a photojournalist. If there is a story to be told with a photograph, I tell it. As a longtime resident of Washington, DC, a lot of my photographs are of this area, and I enjoy writing in the description something about the shot -- it could be a short statement about an equestrian statue in the middle of a park, or a more intimate tale of the mausoleum where Abraham Lincoln's son, Willie, was entombed for the remaining three years of Lincoln's presidency after the boy's death.
