Audie Murphy was America's most-decorated World War II soldier, earning an unprecedented 28 medals, including the Medal of Honor at the age of 19 when he single-handedly held off an entire company of German soldiers for an hour in France (the French also awarded him a medal for that act). Murphy was wounded three times during the world conflict, and when the war ended in May, 1945, he was only twenty years old. After the war, he embarked on a successful career in movies and television, starring in "To Hell and Back" which was based on his own memoir about his war experiences. Many believe one of his best performances was in "Red Badge of Courage". Murphy died in a plane crash in 1971 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery outside Washington, DC. Despite his great achievements in war and all the associated honors, Murphy wanted a simple, humble tombstone like those of his fellow soldiers, even though he was entitled to something more grand. I enjoy photography and writing, and sometimes think of myself as a photojournalist. If there is a story to be told with a photograph, I tell it. As a longtime resident of Washington, DC, a lot of my photographs are of this area, and I enjoy writing in the description something about the shot -- it could be a short statement about an equestrian statue in the middle of a park, or a more intimate tale of the mausoleum where Abraham Lincoln's son, Willie, was entombed for the remaining three years of Lincoln's presidency after the boy's death.
