Description
It was 34 years ago in August 1981 when Concepcion Picciotto staked her ground with a plastic tent across the street from the White House in Lafayette Square. I should know, since moving here myself in 1982 she has always been there, in that exact spot on the sidewalk, with her many posters for a lot of different causes. Known as Connie or Conchita, she is a passionate woman who quickly and forcefully speaks her mind (at the time this photograph was taken, she was yelling "Shame! Shame!" ). With this 34th anniversary of Connie's bold, defiant crusade for world peace and justice for all, she holds the record for conducting the longest continuous act of political protest in the United States by a single individual. And throughout it all, she has looked (and yelled) directly across the street at the White House, beginning during the presidency of Ronald Reagan, and up to Barack Obama.
Note: Connie Picciotto died on January 25, 2016 in Washington, DC. Rest in peace, Connie.
