Description
Yesterday was International Women's Day around the world, and in many American communities it was also Day Without a Woman, and the color du jour was red. Throughout Washington, DC women were everywhere -- marching, rallying, listening to speakers, holding up posters, handing out pamphlets, even singing and dancing in front of the White House. Red was everywhere. I took this photograph in Lafayette Park because the sign brought back memories of the Equal Rights Amendment, or ERA, from my youth forty to fifty years ago. It was a great disappointment to me that this simple amendment demanding equality between men and women failed, and throughout my adult life I have often wondered why it failed. Why?
