Description
We knew him as Bobby Kennedy, but young people today probably know him as Robert Kennedy, a brother of assassinated president John Kennedy. Bobby was shot fifty years ago tomorrow and died in the early hours of June 6, 1963. His assassination was five years after the death of his brother, President Kennedy. It was a terrible time for those of us who lived through it. First, the death of President Kennedy was unfathomable, a true American tragedy, and those of us of a certain age remember exactly what we were doing when we heard that the President had been shot. Then five years later in 1968 Bobby ran for the Democratic nomination to be President of the United States, and on the night of June 5, 1968, after winning the California primary he was shot at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. I have a vivid memory of watching this on television. When I venture over to Arlington National Cemetery, I usually visit the Kennedy grave site, first pausing at the grave of President Kennedy, and then walking down a nearby path to Bobby's grave. This photograph was taken on one of those visits. It was a cold, winter day, and the grave was covered with snow, and a long, eerie shadow of the cross spread out across the whiteness. It was a chilling image, an image that I think is appropriate when you consider the circumstances of Bobby's death.
