Description
Octagon House, named after an "octagon" which has eight sides, or eight exterior walls as is the case with this house, was built between 1799 and 1802 in Washington, DC. A block from the White House, Octagon House served as the residence of President James Madison and First Lady Dolley Madison after the White House was destroyed by fire during the War of 1812. In Octagon House the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812, was ratified by President Madison on February 17, 1815. As for photographing all eight sides of this house in one photograph, I obviously found that impossible to do, so I settled for a frontal shot that shows a few of them. (An aerial shot would have given me all eight sides, but I am not a bird.)
