Artist's Description

The painter stepped away from his easel long enough for me to photograph both his work, and the painting on the gallery's wall that he was replicating (unfortunately I did not get his name). I do not know if most art museums in the world allow painters to come in with their own easel and canvas to paint a famous painting, but at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. it is commonplace.

The painting on the wall is "Miss Juliana Willoughby" by George Romney around 1782. If I am doing my math correctly, in 2012 she is 230 years old. What an high honor it would be to have someone reproducing an artistic work of mine a couple of centuries after it was created. When I saw this today a big smile came over my face, and I hope Mr. Romney was looking down and smiling as well at the sight of a painting of his painting.

These photographs are contained in the aptly named "Washington DC" Collection. In addition to "WDC" there are eight other Collections on this page, and two of my favorites are "Paintings" and...
