This is a partial view of the sarcophagus of the Right Reverend Alfred Harding, the second Episcopal Bishop of Washington, in the Chapel of the Resurrection in the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Harding was born in Ireland in 1852 and immigrated to the United States in 1867, where he became a naturalized citizen in 1870. Harding graduated from Trinity College and Berkeley Divinity School, and was ordained a priest in 1883. In 1909, he became the Bishop of Washington. Harding died in 1934, and is entombed in the National Cathedral with his wife and infant child. His sarcophagus was made by W. Douglas Caroe, the resident architect of Canterbury Cathedral, and was carved from a single slab of marble. The sarcophagus is located on the crypt level of the National Cathedral, directly below the main floor.
I enjoy photography and writing, and sometimes think of myself as a photojournalist. If there is a story to be told with a photograph, I tell it. As a longtime resident of Washington, DC, a lot of my photographs are of this area, and I enjoy writing in the description something about the shot -- it could be a short statement about an equestrian statue in the middle of a park, or a more intimate tale of the mausoleum where Abraham Lincoln's son, Willie, was entombed for the remaining three years of Lincoln's presidency after the boy's death.
