Description
The Dupont Underground is a recently opened arts space that serves as a multidisciplinary platform for creative expression. It is located beneath the famous Dupont Circle of Washington, DC, and occupies the 75,000 square feet that was originally established as an underground trolley station in 1949. The trolley closed over fifty years ago and the subterranean space has been largely closed and inaccessible for most of that time (there have been a couple of attempts to use the underground space, most notably as a food court, in the mid-1990s). Since Dupont, both above and below ground, is in the form of a circle, as was the trolley station, above ground and around the circle there are several entrances that are downward steps to the space below. Of the five or so such entrances, the only one that is opened and people can use to enter the underground is at 19th Street and the Circle. This photograph captures that entrance, and the mural that looms over the downward steps is by Jay F. Coleman, a Washington artist.
