Description
On the facade of Union Station, above its front entrances, are six statues by American sculptor Louis St. Gaudens, the brother of renowned sculptor Augustus St. Gaudens. Collectively, these statues are entitled “The Progress of Railroading” and each represents a mythological figure; from left to right there is Prometheus, for fire; Thales, for electricity; Themis, for freedom and justice; Apollo, for immigration and inspiration; Ceres, for agriculture; and Archimedes, for mechanics.
Union Station has sometimes been called “America’s Railroad Station.” Located on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, it is the city's center for subway and all rail traffic, including Amtrak train service up the busy "eastern corridor" with stops in Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City and Boston. The station was built in 1907 and was its busiest during World War II when an average of 200,000 passengers a day passed through its enormous main hall and exited primarily from the building beneath these six colossal statues (it was during World War II when Union Station became known as “America’s Railroad Station").
From 1973 to 2009, President Joe Biden was a United States Senator, and for these 36 years he traveled daily by train between his home in Wilmington, Delaware and Union Station, which is next to the Capitol in Washington. I have heard it said that Biden is the best historian in Washington when it comes to Union Station, and after 36 years, I would be surprised if he was not.
