Description
Founded in 1794, St. Patrick’s Church is the oldest parish in Washington, DC. It was established as a place of worship for Irish immigrants who had come to the capital city as stonemasons to build the White House and the United States Capitol. Pope Francis visited the Catholic church in September, 2015, during his historic visit to America. Located on Tenth Street in downtown Washington, St. Patrick’s is approximately mid-way between the White House and the Capitol (one block below the church on Tenth Street is Ford’s Theater, where Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in April, 1865).
