Description
"Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone." This quote is by John A. Joyce, a poet and philosopher who was born in West Virginia in 1842. After serving in the American Civil War, Joyce settled in Washington, D.C., where he lived until his death in 1915. He became a writer, and wrote extensively of life in the nation's capitol. One of his most famous poems is about Oak Hill Cemetery, where he is buried. "To live and to rot, and then be forgot", is a phrase from the poem. This photograph was taken at Mr. Joyce's grave site in Oak Hill, the "high society" cemetery in Washington, D.C.
