Artist's Description

John Witherspoon was the the only clergyman to sign the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1776. Witherspoon was born on February 5, 1722, in Scotland, and came to America in 1768 to be president of the College of New Jersey. He loved America and as a delegate to the Continental Congress he worked with colonists to established a new country. On November 15, 1794, Witherspoon died in Princeton.

This bronze statue of Witherspoon was made by William Couper in 1922 to 1923 and is located at the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and N Street, a block south of Dupont Circle, in Washington, DC.
