Description
Looking up at the elaborate ceiling in the Main Hall of Union Station, the transportation hub of Washington, DC. It is the city's center for subway and all rail traffic, including Amtrak train service up the busy "eastern corridor" with stops in Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City and Boston. The station, which was built in 1907 and is to the immediate north side of the United States Capitol, was its busiest during World War II when an average of 200,000 passengers a day traveled through this Main Hall and looked up at the ceiling we see today. It is still one of the busiest, and largest, train stations in America. (The color of the ceiling is actually off-white, but this photograph was taken at night, and the green color is the result of lights that were on in the Main Hall.)
