Description
We in Washington, DC consider the National Mall our front and back yards, since many of us do not have a yard at all. On a beautiful day, people come in droves to the Mall, lying on the grass either by themselves or with friends. In this photograph, we are near the Lincoln Memorial (it was behind me as I took this shot). The water on the left side of the photograph is the Reflecting Pool which is directly in front of the Lincoln Memorial. There is also the World War II Memorial at the end of the Reflecting Pool, recognizable by several upright slabs that marks each of the states and territories that fought in the war. And of course you see the Washington Monument, the tallest and most visible building in our nation's capital. Also, the grayish or golden brown building to the left of the Washington Monument is the new National Museum of African-American History and Culture. This photograph captures barely one half of the length of the National Mal. There is so much more beyond the Washington Monument to see, including about ten Smithsonian museums and a lot more grass to take naps on, read a book, or play with your cell phone or iPad. The National Mall ends at the United States Capital, which is too far down there to be visible in this photograph.
