"Family of Saltimbanques" was painted by Pablo Picasso in 1905. It is considered the masterpiece of Picasso's Rose Period, which was early in his career. The painting shows six people who appear to be circus performers, but they are isolated and alone, and the fun and laughter that is associated with their trade is not evident on their faces. Five of the six people are huddled together, dressed in their circus attire. But alone in a corner of the painting is this woman. She is looking away from the others, and is not dressed in obvious circus costume. Who is she? And what is her relationship to the group she is sitting apart from? A photograph of the full painting of the saltimbanques precedes this one in my gallery and can be accessed by clicking on the above "PREV" (for "previous"). The painting, which is one of Picasso's largest at 7' by 7.5', was photographed at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
I enjoy photography and writing, and sometimes think of myself as a photojournalist. If there is a story to be told with a photograph, I tell it. As a longtime resident of Washington, DC, a lot of my photographs are of this area, and I enjoy writing in the description something about the shot -- it could be a short statement about an equestrian statue in the middle of a park, or a more intimate tale of the mausoleum where Abraham Lincoln's son, Willie, was entombed for the remaining three years of Lincoln's presidency after the boy's death.
