Description
The Iwo Jima Monument, formally known as the United States Marine Corps Memorial, is adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, DC. The large monument depicts six World War II soldiers raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the Battle of Iwo Jima (five Marines and one Navy corpsman). The actual event was immortalized by journalist Joe Rosenthal in his Pulitzer Prize winning photograph, which in 1954 served as the basis for the new Marine Corps Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. (This photograph, taken from the monument's south side, does not show all six soldiers.)
