Description
In the late 1800s it became apparent that the United States Capitol building no longer had the space for the offices for members of the Senate and House of Representatives, so after the turn of the century plans were made to build two congressional office buildings. On the south side of the building, which is the side of the Capitol where the House meets, construction began on Independence Avenue for the Canon House Office Building, and on the north side of the Capitol, the Russell Senate Office Building began to rise on Constitution Avenue. This photograph is of the Beaux-Arts styled Russell building, a nearly 700,000 square-foot edifice which opened in 1909 (the Canon building opened a year earlier). Today, a little more than a century later, there are now three Senate office buildings, and five for the House. (The other congressional office buildings are Dirksen and Hart for the Senate, and Longworth, O'Neill and Ford for the House. All buildings, including the main Capitol building, are connected by an underground subway system.)
