Description
Mathew Brady is generally considered the most famous American photographer from the early days of the profession, and is best known for his brilliant and at times disturbing photographs of the Civil War's carnage in the 1860s. Brady began as a portraitist when he opened his studio in 1844, and photographed many famous people including presidents Andrew Jackson and John Quincy Adams. He took several photographs of Abraham Lincoln and one of his images of the president is on the five dollar bill and the penny. But it is Brady's extensive collection of photographs documenting every aspect of the Civil War that has become his legacy and for which he is most renowned, as is noted on his tombstone at Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC.
