Description
The Washington Monument, photographed at an angle, from the pond and awning of the National Museum of African-American History and Culture in Washington, DC.
The Washington Monument was erected as a memorial to George Washington, the first President of the United States. At a height of 554 feet it is both the tallest stone structure and the tallest obelisk in the world. Construction began in 1848, was halted from 1854 to 1877 primarily because of the Civil War and related issues, then resumed after a 23-year lapse and was completed in 1888.
The National Museum of African-American History and Culture (NMAAHC) opened on September 24, 2016 in a ceremony led by President Barack Obama, with former Presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton present (the ceremony was held underneath this awning). NMAAHC is a Smithsonian Institution museum that tells the African-American experience -- its history and culture -- beginning in the early days of slavery to modern-day America. It is located near the Washington Monument on a corner of the national mall at 15th Street and Constitution Avenue.
