Description
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers in Arlington National Cemetery is on a hill overlooking Washington, DC. It was established in 1921 to honor an unknown soldier from World War I, and was followed by two soldiers from World War II (one for each of the two hemispheres the war was fought in), and then a soldier from the Korean War. There was an unknown soldier from the Vietnam War, but DNA revealed his identity in 1998 and his family had his body removed so he could be buried back home. This photograph was composed in a way that would allow the Washington Monument to be visible in the far distance. In a way, it is as if George is keeping an eye on (or guarding) the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers from his perch across the Potomac river.
