Description
If I was 151 years old, a lot of scaffolding and big bandages would be needed to restore my original beauty. And so it is with the United States Capitol Dome, which began undergoing extensive repairs this past summer. It should be completed by January, 2017, when the Capitol will be in the world's spotlight as the next President of the United States is sworn in on its grounds. There are over 1,000 cracks and other deficiencies to be repaired, so the Capitol Dome does need a major make-over. Throughout it all, Lady of Freedom, the bronze statue atop the dome, continues to stand proudly for our nation, as she has done since 1863 when she was installed on that lofty post (she's a big girl at over 19 feet in height, and weighing 15,000 pounds).
