Description
The United States Capitol was completed in1800 and has been expanded over the years, most notably with the dome over the center of the building. The United States has a bicameral legislature, the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Senate occupies the north side of the Capitol (the large part of the building that is shown on the right side of this photograph), and the House of Representatives conducts its business on the building’s south side. The neoclassical-styled building was partially destroyed by fire during the War of 1812 and was rebuilt over the next decade. The most major and noticeable addition to the building was the gigantic dome, which was constructed from 1855 to 1866. In the years since, massive additions have been made on the streets that border the Capitol -- on the north side, there are three large Senate office buildings, and to the south, five office buildings for the House of Representatives. All of these buildings are connected by an underground rail system.
