Description
After 35 years in this city, I am still finding treasures like this statue. Who knew we had a Titanic memorial? It is off the beaten-track in southwest Washington, and I came upon it for the first time today. It is a magnificent statue. On the base of the memorial is the statement: "To the brave men who perished in the wreck of the Titanic on April 15, 1912. They gave their lives that women and children might be saved." It also states that the memorial was "erected by the women of America."
The thirteen-foot-tall granite statue was designed by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and sculpted by John Horrigan in 1930. It was unveiled by Helen Taft, the widow of President Taft, on May 26, 1931. The memorial is on the waterfront at Washington Channel Park, 4th and P Streets, SW, Washington, DC.
