Artist's Description
"Who Is Sylvia? What Is She, That All The Swains Commend Her?" was painted by Edwin Austin Abbey around 1900. The painting depicts a scene from Shakespeare's "Two Gentlemen of Verona". In Act 4, Scene 2 the Host sings the following to Sylvia:
"Who is Sylvia? What is she, that all our swains commend her?
Holy, fair and wise is she; the heaven such grace did lend her, that she might admired be.
Is she kind as she is fair?
For beauty lives with kindness.
Love doth to her eyes repair, to help him of his blindness, and, being help'd, inhabits there.
Then to Sylvia let us sing, that Sylvia is excelling; she excels each mortal thing upon the dull earth dwelling: To her let us garlands bring."

I enjoy photography and writing, and sometimes think of myself as a photojournalist. If there is a story to be told with a photograph, I tell it. As a longtime resident of Washington, DC, a lot of my photographs are of this area, and I enjoy writing in the description something about the shot -- it could be a short statement about an equestrian statue in the middle of a park, or a more intimate tale of the mausoleum where Abraham Lincoln's son, Willie, was entombed for the remaining three years of Lincoln's presidency after the boy's death.
