Description
Abraham Lincoln worshiped regularly at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church during his presidency, and even paid $50 a year to rent his own personal pew. Lincoln was good friends with the church's pastor, Rev. Phineas Gurley, and sought his religious counsel during the turbulent years of the Civil War, and with regard to other matters that weighed heavily on his heart, such as the sudden death of his son William Wallace Lincoln in early 1862. Rev. Gurley presided over the funeral of "Willie" Lincoln at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, and then three years later when Lincoln was shot Dr. Gurley conducted the President's funeral service at the church before the body was transported to Springfield, Illinois for burial. Located at the intersection of 13th Street and New York Avenue in Washington, DC, the historic church is three blocks from the White House, and since its establishment in 1859 has seen most Presidents of the United States in attendance, some of them on a regular basis, such as Abraham Lincoln.
