Description
The Memorial Amphitheater in Arlington National Cemetery was dedicated in May, 1920. Behind the stage or podium, outside of the building on its eastern side, is the guarded Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers. Within the circular walls of the amphitheater, there are three large, annual events -- services for both Memorial Day and Veterans Day, and a sunrise service on Easter Sunday (the President of the United States generally speaks at the two events held on Federal holidays). Additionally, funerals for the highest ranked members of the military, such as General John Pershing, to the nameless soldiers interred in the adjacent Tomb of the Unknowns, have occurred here as well as services for five victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks on America, and the funeral a few years ago for Frank Buckles, the last surviving United States veteran of World War I. Arlington National Cemetery is in Arlington, Virginia, outside Washington, DC.
