Description
"Le Discret" is a self-portrait by Joseph Ducreux, a court painter to France's Marie-Antoinette and King Louis XVI. The oval portrait was painted around 1791. Ducreux was known for several self-expressive portraits of himself, such as this one which seems to make fun of the need to be discreet in a court known for its intrigue and scandal. The painting was photographed at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC. It was on loan to the gallery from the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas.
