Description
General Comte de Rochambeau led the French military alongside George Washington and American soldiers in the Revolutionary War. He was selected by French King Louis XVI to command 5,500 Frenchmen in conjunction with Washington. Rochambeau's assistance was invaluable at the Siege of Yorktown in 1781, which was a decisive victory that led to America winning its revolutionary war. This bronze statue of Rochambeau was made around 1901 in France by sculptor Fernand Hamar, and is in Lafayette Square, directly across the street from the White House, in Washington, DC. It was dedicated by President Theodore Roosevelt on May 24, 1902.
