Description
Michelangelo's David-Apollo is the last major work by the artist, and was incomplete when he died in 1564. The marble sculpture is mesmerizing in its unfinished state, with chisel marks clearly apparent, and the surface not yet smoothed out or defined with the minute details that Michelangelo's completed work is known for. Meant to depict the legendary David who slewed Goliath, .the unfinished mound that David has his foot on was meant to be sculpted into Goliath's head. A main attraction of this sculpture, even in its rough, incomplete state, is the dramatic curve of the upper body, with the uplifted arm, and the long hair flowing down the back. The sculpture was on temporary loan to the United States from Italy in early 2013, and while here was the most substantial of any Michelangelo work to be on American soil. It was on display at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., where it was photographed.
