Description
Michelangelo's David-Apollo is the last major work by the artist, and was incomplete when he died in 1564. The marble sculpture is mesmerizing in its unfinished state, with chisel marks clearly apparent, and the surface not yet smoothed out or defined with the minute detail that Michelangelo's completed works are known for. The sculpture depicts the Biblical David who slew Goliath, and was on temporary loan to the United States from Italy in early 2013. It was on display at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., where it was photographed.
