Artist's Description
In this photograph I can see parts of all six men trying to raise the American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the World War II Battle of Iwo Jima. There is one man on the other side of the monument, but his hands can be seen reaching for the flag pole, and there is a man in the rear whose helmet and forehead are barely visible, but you can see both of his arms reaching upward to the pole, with one hand grasping it. So all six men are accounted for. The Iwo Jima Monument, formally known as the United States Marine Corps Memorial, is adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, DC. The large monument depicts the six soldiers, five Marines and one Navy corpsman, who raised the American flag on that historic day in February 1945. The actual event was immortalized by journalist Joe Rosenthal in his Pulitzer Prize winning photograph, which in 1954 served as the basis for the new Marine Corps Memorial in Arlington, Virginia.

As a longtime resident of Washington, DC, a lot of my photographs are of this area, and I enjoy writing in the description something about the shot -- it could be a short statement about an equestrian statue in the middle of a park, or a more intimate tale of the mausoleum where Abraham Lincoln's son, Willie, was entombed for the remaining three years of Lincoln's presidency after the boy's death.
