Artist's Description

This is an "up closer" photograph of the famous sculpture by Augustus Saint-Gaudens that marks the grave site of Clover and Henry Adams in Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C. (Two preceding photographs in this gallery show the full length of the sculpture, and are entitled "The Suicide of Clover Adams", which is the title I chose to tell the tragic story behind the creation of this sculpture.) Henry Adams preferred to call the sculpture "The Adams Memorial", but most people call it "Grief", which is short for "The Mystery of the Hereafter and The Peace of God that Passeth Understanding", and is the convoluted title Saint-Guadens gave his masterpiece.

I enjoy photography and writing, and sometimes think of myself as a photojournalist. If there is a story to be told with a photograph, I tell it. As a longtime resident of Washington, DC, a lot of my photographs are of this area, and I enjoy writing in the description something about the shot -- it could be a short statement about an equestrian statue in the middle of a park, or a more intimate tale of the mausoleum where Abraham Lincoln's son, Willie, was entombed for the remaining three years of Lincoln's presidency after the boy's death.
