I took this photograph just hours after the burial of Senator Edward M. Kennedy (Ted) on the evening of August 29, 2009, in Arlington National Cemetery. He was buried after nightfall, and the next morning as soon as the gates opened, I went to his grave site and photographed his tombstone. I was alone while walking to the grave, but ten minutes later when I turned to leave, there was at least a hundred people coming up the hill to visit Kennedy's grave. At the time of his death from brain cancer on August 25, 2009, Kennedy was the fourth-longest-serving United States Senator, having been in the Senate for 47 years beginning in 1962. Ted Kennedy was the youngest brother of President John F. Kennedy who was assassinated on November 22, 1963, and Senator Robert F. Kennedy, who was assassinated on June 6, 1968, on the night he won the California Democratic primary in his bid for the presidency of the United States. His eldest brother, Joseph P. I enjoy photography and writing, and sometimes think of myself as a photojournalist. If there is a story to be told with a photograph, I tell it. As a longtime resident of Washington, DC, a lot of my photographs are of this area, and I enjoy writing in the description something about the shot -- it could be a short statement about an equestrian statue in the middle of a park, or a more intimate tale of the mausoleum where Abraham Lincoln's son, Willie, was entombed for the remaining three years of Lincoln's presidency after the boy's death.
