Description
This photograph is of one of the two urns at the main entrance to Lafayette Square on its south side, directly across the street from the White House in Washington, D.C. Known as the "Navy Yard Urns" perhaps because the Secretary of the Navy, George M. Robeson, was involved in the establishment of the park, and took a particular interest in having the urns made. Andrew Jackson Dowling was the architect of Lafayette Square, and either he or his assistant, Calver Vaux, designed the urns in the 1850s. The urns border the main walkway into Lafayette Square from Pennsylvania Avenue, and this particular urn is on the far east side of the "double lane" walkway. If you would like to see the other urn to the west, a photograph of it precedes this one in my gallery and can be accessed by clicking on the above "PREV" (for "Previous").
