Artist's Description
This sculpted woman stands atop the graves of Brigadier General Richard L. Hoxie and his wife, Vinnie Ream, a famous sculptress in the 1800s. Hoxie had a long military career, beginning with the American Civil War, and continuing through the Spanish-American War. In addition to being a Brigadier General, he was also the longtime Chief of Army Engineers and oversaw the building of several important fortifications across America. His wife, Vinnie Ream, is best known for her sculpture of President Abraham Lincoln, which has been in the rotunda of the United States Capitol since it was created. Ream was only eighteen years old when she was commissioned by Congress in 1865 to make the marble bust of Lincoln (after Lincoln's death, Ream was given some of the President's clothing to help her get a feel of the man she was going to make a bust of). I enjoy photography and writing, and sometimes think of myself as a photojournalist. If there is a story to be told with a photograph, I tell it. As a longtime resident of Washington, DC, a lot of my photographs are of this area, and I enjoy writing in the description something about the shot -- it could be a short statement about an equestrian statue in the middle of a park, or a more intimate tale of the mausoleum where Abraham Lincoln's son, Willie, was entombed for the remaining three years of Lincoln's presidency after the boy's death.
