Description
Alice Roosevelt Longworth was the eldest child of President Theodore Roosevelt. At the age of 17 when her father unexpectedly became president following the death of William McKinley, she shot into the limelight as one of the most famous teenagers in the world, and when she died in 1980 at the age of 96, she had lived a legendary life full of candor, wit, glamour, and just plain nastiness. A gossipy woman, she was known to have dirt on everyone, and enjoyed spreading it. A favorite target of hers was J. Edgar Hoover, a man everyone in America seemed to fear but Alice Roosevelt Longworth.
She married once and had one child, a daughter named Paulina (her husband was not the father of the child, a lover was). Tragically, Paulina died from a pill overdose in 1957 at the age of 31. Both mother and daughter are buried together in Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C., and share a tombstone.
