Description
This statue of Alexander Hamilton is at the United States Department of the Treasury in Washington, DC. In addition to being the first Secretary of the Treasury, Hamilton was a Founding Father, beginning his rise to power as a chief staff aide to General George Washington during the American Revolutionary War, and going on to be the founder of the nation's financial system, the founder of the Federalist Party, and the author of 51 of the 85 installments of The Federalist Papers. Hamilton famously died on July 12, 1804 from a duel he had with his nemesis Aaron Burr, the Vice President of the United States.
Behind Hamilton in this photograph is the Treasury Building, one of the oldest Federal buildings in Washington. Construction of the still-existing east side and central wing was completed in 1842, and the full building as it is known today was finished in 1864.
The bronze statue of Hamilton was made by sculptor James Earl Fraser and dedicated on May 17, 1923. It stands on the south side of the building. (On the north side is a statue of Albert Gallatin, the fourth and longest serving Treasury Secretary.)
