Description
This sarcophagus contains the remains of George Washington, the first President of the United States, who died on December 14, 1799, at Mount Vernon, his estate on a bluff overlooking the Potomac River in the state of Virginia. There are two sarcophagi inside the gated tomb, the other, which is next to his, is for Martha Washington, his wife (her sarcophagus is not in this photograph). Their sarcophagi are in an open space that the public can view through the dark bars of a gate, which makes photographing the interior difficult, particularly at those times of the day when the gate's bars cause eerie shadows throughout the interior. This photograph was taken at such a time. (Behind the back wall of this open space where the sarcophagi are, is an extensive tomb where twenty-five members of the Washington family are interred.)
