Description
On a wall at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, DC are several quotes King gave in his famous "I Have a Dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963. One of his most famous quotes is "We shall overcome because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
King was the leader of America’s Civil Rights Movement from the mid-1950s until his assassination in April, 1968. His speeches and writings and nonviolence resistance earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. King was assassinated by James Earl Ray at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial opened in August, 2011, and is the only national memorial to a non-President on the National Mall in Washington. The memorial is located on the Tidal Basin, across the water from the memorial for President Thomas Jefferson and about a hundred yards from the memorial for President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, also on the Tidal Basin.
