Description
The celebrated American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens was commissioned to make the Shaw Memorial in the early 1880s, and it was completed and dedicated in 1897. The sculpture masterly depicts Colonel Robert Shaw and the first African-American infantry from the North (Massachusetts) to fight for the Union during the Civil War. This is an "up close" view of the left side of the memorial. A photograph of the full memorial precedes this one in my gallery and can be accessed by clicking on the above "PREV" (for "Previous"). The Shaw Memorial is on prominent display at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., where it was photographed.
