Description
This is an "up close" photograph of the famous sculpture by Augustus Saint-Gaudens that marks the grave site of Clover and Henry Adams in Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C. (The two preceding photographs in this gallery show the full length of the sculpture, and are entitled "The Suicide of Clover Adams", which is the title I chose to tell the tragic story behind the creation of this sculpture.) Henry Adams preferred to call the sculpture "The Adams Memorial", but most people call it "Grief", which is short for "The Mystery of the Hereafter and The Peace of God that Passeth Understanding", and is the convoluted title Saint-Guadens gave his masterpiece.
