Description
St. Thomas' Parish is a church in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, DC. A fire destroyed the church's entire sanctuary in 1970, but for the past 47 years the church continued to operate, holding its services in a large social hall and a few smaller rooms that were not destroyed. As a resident of Dupont Circle, St. Thomas has been my polling location for elections, both local and national, for the past 35 years. It was the mult--purposed social hall where people went to vote, and community meetings and social gatherings were held, in addition to serving as a sanctuary for worship services. Finally, after almost five decades, construction has started on building a large, new parish, with, of course, a sanctuary where people may worship. That St. Thomas was able to function for so many decades without a sanctuary is a remarkable statement of the church's determination to serve the God it was established to worship and celebrate.
This photograph is of the area where the fire occurred and destroyed the church’s sanctuary, and where construction has begun on building a new sanctuary. Beyond the wall is the church’s social hall and other rooms that survived the fire.
