This is the grave of John Philip Sousa, a composer and conductor who was known as "The March King" of America. His "Stars and Stripes Forever" is the National March of the United States. Other marches include "Semper Fidelis" the official march of the United States Marine Corps. Sousa was the director and conductor of the United States Marine Band and led marches at some of America's most prominent national events, such as inaugurations, state funerals, Fourth of July celebrations, etc. After a long career in the military, he left the Marine Band to form the Sousa Band and continued composing march music until the end of his life.
John Philip Sousa was born on November 6, 1854, in Washington, DC, and died on March 6, 1932. He is buried at Congressional Cemetery in Washington.
