Description
The Temperance Fountain, originally a drinking fountain meant to encourage people to drink water instead of alcohol, no longer provides water and now is regarded as a memorial to the Temperance movement. Above the canopy is a life-size heron, and beneath the canopy water once flowed from the snouts of two entwined dolphins into a brass cup below that people drank from. Today it is hard to recognize what the original intent was with this structure that has the word "Temperance" on it, and it was only recently through research did I realize it was actually, at one time, a drinking fountain.
The Temperance Fountain was built in 1884 and stands on the north side of Pennsylvania Avenue and Seventh Street, behind the Grand Army of the Republic monument, in Washington, DC.
It was once voted the ugliest statue in Washington.
