Description
Arlington Memorial Bridge, widely known as simply Memorial Bridge, crosses the Potomac River connecting Washington, D.C. with the state of Virginia. The bridge begins at the western end of the National Mall directly behind the Lincoln Memorial and goes across the river to Arlington National Cemetery.
At the eastern end of the bridge, where the bridge begins or ends in Washington, D.C., are two equestrian sculptures. On the south side of the bridge is the sculpture "Valor" of a male equestrian accompanied by a female striding forward at his side with a shield. Directly across the bridge on its north side is the sculpture Sacrifice" in which a standing female symbolizing the earth looks up at the male on the horse whose name is Mars. Both sculptures were made by Leo Friedlander, and were gifts from "the people of Italy to the people of the United States". Although they were commissioned in 1925, they were not erected until 1951.
This photograph is of the sculpture "Valor".
