Half of this photograph, the left side, is a reflection of the right side. These people are visiting the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, DC, which is also known simply as "The Wall". Maya Ying Lin, a 21 year-old Yale undergraduate, won a public design competition for the memorial in 1981. The Wall was built the following year and was dedicated on Veterans Day 1982. The memorial is made up of two black granite walls 246 feet 9 inches long. The walls are sunk into the ground with the earth behind them. At the highest tip (the apex where the two granite walls meet), they are 10.1 feet high, and they taper to a height of eight inches at the two extremities. Inscribed on the walls are the names of over 58,000 servicemen and women who were either killed in action or are classified as missing in action.
The apex of The Wall is at the center of this photograph, where the year 1959 is. That is the "split" in the photograph, with the left side reflecting the right.
I enjoy photography and writing, and sometimes think of myself as a photojournalist. If there is a story to be told with a photograph, I tell it. As a longtime resident of Washington, DC, a lot of my photographs are of this area, and I enjoy writing in the description something about the shot -- it could be a short statement about an equestrian statue in the middle of a park, or a more intimate tale of the mausoleum where Abraham Lincoln's son, Willie, was entombed for the remaining three years of Lincoln's presidency after the boy's death.
