Description
This photograph is of people walking the width of the long, thin Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, DC. The memorial, also known simply as "The Wall", was designed by Maya Ying Lin, a Yale undergraduate who at age 21 won a public design competition for the memorial. Built in 1982, the memorial is made up of two black granite walls 246 feet 9 inches long. The walls are sunk into the ground with the earth behind them. At the highest tip (the apex where the two granite walls meet), they are 10.1 feet high, and they taper to a height of eight inches at the two extremities. Inscribed on the walls are the names of over 58,000 servicemen and women who were either killed in action or are classified as missing in action.
