Description
Patrick Francis Healy, 1830-1910, was the first African American to earn a PhD, the first to become a Jesuit priest, and the first to become president of a major university in the United States -- Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
Georgetown University's most prominent building is Healy Hall. It was built from 1877 to 1879 and named for Father Healy. Today Healy Hall is full of classrooms, administrative offices, and houses the 750-seat Gaston Hall, a world-famous auditorium where Presidents and other world leaders have appeared over the past century.
This is a photograph of the main staircase in Healy Hall.
